◆ 주의해야 할 비교급 구문

Teaching Point 1 : not more than과 no more than
not more than은 at most (많아야, 기껏해야)의 뜻이고, no more than은 only (단지, 겨우)의 뜻이다.

• She has not more than 20 books. (그녀는 많아야 20권의 책을 갖고 있다.)
  < ☞ 20권보다 적을 수도 있다.>
• She has no more than 20 books. (그녀는 단지 20권의 책을 가지고 있다.)
  < ☞ 더도 덜도 아니다.>

• He spent not more than 100 dollars. (그는 기껏해야 100달러를 썼다.)
  < ☞ 100달러보다 덜 썼을 수도 있다.>
• He spent no more than 100 dollars. (그는 겨우 100달러를 썼을 뿐이다.)
  < ☞ 더도 덜도 아니다.>

Teaching Point 2 : not less than과 no less than
not less than은 at least (적어도)의 뜻이고, no less than은 as much as (~ 만큼)의 뜻이다.

• You will have to wait not less than two weeks. (당신은 적어도 2주일은 기다려야 할 것이다.)
  < ☞ 2주일보다 더 걸릴 수도 있다.>
• You will have to wait no less than two weeks. (당신은 2주일이나 기다려야 할 것이다.)
  < ☞ 더도 덜도 아니다.>

• He gave me not less than $500. (그는 나에게 적어도 500달러를 주었다.)
  < ☞ 500달러보다 더 주었을 수도 있다.>
• He gave me no less than $500. (그는 나에게 500달러나 주었다.)
  < ☞ 더도 덜도 아니다.>

  cf. It did not cost less than $10. (적어도 10달러는 들었다.)

Teaching Point 3 : A is not more ~ than B / A is not less ~ than B
「A is not more ~ than B」는「A는 B 만큼 ~하지 않다」의 뜻이고, 「A is not less ~ than B」는「A는 B 못지 않게 ~하다」의 뜻이다.

• This question is not more difficult than that one. (이 문제는 저것만큼 어렵지는 않다.)
• She is not less beautiful than her sister. (그녀는 언니 못지 않게 아름답다.)
• I am not less anxious than you to go abroad. (나도 당신 못지 않게 해외로 나가고 싶다.)

Teaching Point 4 : A is no more+명사+than B = A is not+명사+any more than B
「A is no more+명사+than B」는「A is not+명사+any more than B」와 같은 뜻의 구문으로「A가 ~이 아닌 것은 B가 ~이 아닌 것과 같다, B와 마찬가지로 A도 ~아니다」의 뜻을 갖는다.

• A whale is no more a fish than a horse is. (고래가 물고기가 아닌 것은 말이 물고기가 아닌 것과 같다.)
• He is not a god any more than we are. (우리와 마찬가지로 그도 신이 아니다.)
• I was no more mad than you (were). (당신과 마찬가지로 나도 미치지 않았다.)

Teaching Point 5 : not so much A as B = less A than B = more B than A
「not so much A as B」,「less A than B」,「more B than A」는 모두「A라기 보다는 B」라는 뜻의 구문이다.

• He is not so much a scholar as a businessman. (그는 학자라기보다는 사업가이다.)
• She is less beautiful than intelligent. (그녀는 아름답기보다는 오히려 지적이다.)
• These shoes are more comfortable than pretty. (이 신발은 아름답다기보다는 편안하다.)
  = These shoes are comfortable rather than pretty.

  주의: These shoes are more pretty than comfortable.에서는 pretty와 comfortable이라는 단어가 비교의 대상이므로 pretty를 비교급으로 하여 These shoes are prettier than comfortable.이라고 쓸 수가 없다.

Teaching Point 6 : know better than to+동사원형
「know better than to+동사원형」은 「~할만큼 어리석지 않다」는 뜻의 구문이다.

• You should know better than to say so. (그런 말을 할만큼 어리석어서는 안 된다.)
• I know better than to quarrel. (나는 싸울 만큼 어리석지 않다.)
• We know better than to do such things. (우리는 그런 일을 할만큼 어리석지 않다.)

Teaching Point 7 : 비교급+and+비교급
「비교급+and+비교급」은「점점 더, 더욱 더」라는 뜻을 갖는다.

• It is getting darker and darker. (점점 더 어두워지고 있다.)
• Our world is getting smaller and smaller. (이 세상은 점점 더 작아지고 있다.)

Teaching Point 8 : no longer = not ~ any longer
no longer와 not ~ any longer는「더 이상 ~아니다, 이제는 ~아니다」라는 뜻의 구문이다.

• You are no longer a child. (당신은 이제 아이가 아니다.)
  = You are not a child any longer.
• I could wait for him no longer. (나는 더 이상 그를 기다릴 수 없었다.)
  = I could not wait for him any longer.
• A visit to the moon is no longer a dream. (달나라 여행이 이제는 꿈이 아니다.)
  = A visit to the moon is not a dream any longer.
• I can’t stay here any longer. (나는 더 이상 여기에 머룰 수가 없다.)

  참고: no longer, not ~ any longer 대신에 no more, not ~ any more를 쓰기도 한다.

  • I can stand it no more. (나는 더 이상은 참을 수가 없다.)
    = I cannot stand it any more.
  • I’m not going to travel any more. (나는 더 이상은 여행을 하지 않을 것이다.)

Teaching Point 9 : more than+수사
「more than+수사」는「~ 이상의」라는 뜻이다.

• More than 200 students were present at the meeting. (200명 이상의 학생이 회의에 참석했다.)
• More than 10 million people live in this city. (천만명 이상의 사람이 이 도시에 살고 있다.)
• There are more than a hundred houses on the hill. (그 언덕 위에는 100채 이상의 집들이 있다.)
